Here’s a new cut, called “How to Boil an Egg,” from Courtney Barnett. She recorded this cut while doing demos for her new LP, still yet to have much more new light shed on.
The track itself is one that Courtney wrote and performed during open mic nights in the very beginning of her career. It was only recently recorded to include on a collaboration—‘Split Singles Club’—between Milk! Records, which Courtney co-founded with her partner Jen Cloher, and Bedroom Suck, two of Australia’s most revered indie labels. She experimented with playing all instruments herself on the recording.
So, the same way “Pickles From The Jar” and “Three Packs A Day” were released in the past, “How To Boil An Egg” is a stand alone song. “I used to perform this song at all the open-mics when I was 21. It never got recorded, so for personal-posterity I updated it and made this version recently when I was bunkered up in the bush doin’ some demos for my next album,” she explains. “In tradition of the Milk! Records compilation releases, I wanted to include a song of mine for Split Singles Club that was a tad left of album-centre. it’s a songwriting experiment that doesn’t really belong anywhere else.”
“How To Boil An Egg” will be available on digital and streaming services and as an exclusive physical release on Milk! Records and Bedroom Suck’s Split Singles Club. There are still a limited number of vinyl subscriptions available at http://www.splitsingles.club
